Sam Adams Utopias is a blend of past extreme beers aged in barrels with bourbon, aquavit, carcavelos, cognac, madeira, and ruby port. In 1999, the beer evolved into Millennium, and later adopted the name Utopias in 2002.
This beer starts with a special blend of two-row pale malt combined with Munich and Caramel 60 malts that impart a rich, ruby color. It sold for the then unheard of price of 100 per case, which pales in comparison to the price of Utopias now. Brewing, blending, and aging Utopias is a multi-step, time-intensive and complex process. We have produced only 8,000 bottles of Sam Adams Utopias in 2003 to be enjoyed by a select audience of better beer drinkers. Utopias are made with caramel, Vienna, Moravian and Bavarian smoked malts, and all four varieties of noble hops: Hallertauer Mittelfrh. Your bottle of Sam Adams Utopias has been packaged in a unique, collectible copper-finished brew kettle decanter reminiscent of the brew kettles used by brewmasters for hundreds of years. The beer was stronger than Millennium, a single release brew made by Sam Adams in 1999, at 21 alcohol. This was the beer industry’s first barrel-aged beer. Samuel Adams Utopias, which went on sale in February 2002, was claimed to be the strongest commercial beer in the world, at 27 alcohol by volume.
